just watched a damn good war movie :/ ahhhhhhhh so sad.
the one about 71 South Korean student soldiers left to defend an area from 300 over North Korean soldiers because the country's trained troops left for another battle site. and they did so for 11 hours. (based on a true story and on some letters this soldier wrote to his mother.. sigh so sad, though the letters concept not as pronounced as the Letters to Iwo Jima war movie)

I wouldnt exaggerate and say it's the best war movie i've seen... not exactly on the same level as Black Hawk Down or Behind Enemy Lines or The Patriot.... but it's because the focus is slightly different. this one doesn't have 90% of the movie showing full-scale explosions and war action.
But the 65% of it which are war scenes, especially the last half hour of the critical battle, omg it was good. really good. the imagery that lingers on :/ some scenes are really VERY well-conceptualised/thought through and poignant. sad :/
the entire thing isn't explosion & gun battle ridden because they spent some part of the movie showing how the students were coping/trying to train/committing damn amateur mistakes in less major confrontations because they didnt have much in the way of training or advice. how scared they were. and how a young teenager thrust into such a situation, finding himself placed in charge of an unruly bunch of fellow students, and facing an impending attack. realising that the enemies aren't really monsters either, that they have feelings and can cry for their mothers too. quite sad actually :/ and how in a war, the higher ups sacrifice whole groups of people under the pretext of protecting "the greater good".
i heard of the show coz of TOP, but seriously, the movie is star studded, one of the best A-list korean actor lineups (besides top, who is a rookie). the acting blew me away, all of them were damn good. even the side-show actors had such sad stories and very poignant moments of their own. 11.3 billion dollar production for the 60th anniversary of the Korean war. no wonder they blew so much on it. and top won 7 out of 10 actor nominations for best newcomer in the industry. in the movie you can tell that the other actors woa they're damn good and seasoned, but top brings the emotions across as the main char like damn. i wasn't even thinking of him as TOP the rapper/actor but as the character himself. can really feel for all the stories told in the movie.
ah, idols turned actors aren't always a let-down. (as i've been many a time disappointed when watching dramas, some really cannot act -.- omg but serve a good purpose in prettying up the screen)
